    More 1.60 Update Details
Sony releases new, expanded information on the latest firmware update.
    by Chris Roper
US, March 20, 2007 - Yesterday we brought you news from Japan of what functionality the upcoming 1.60 firmware update would add to the PlayStation 3, but today's US press release shed light on a few more details. In addition to Remote Play support for 20GB models, an on-screen QWERTY keyboard and a zoom function for the web browser, the ability to run Folding@Home and basic background downloading, there will be a handful of other features included.

A disc auto-start option will allow users to choose whether they want their PS3 to automatically play a disc when it's inserted or the machine is turned on. Support for rewriteable Blu-ray discs has been added, as well as the ability to use Bluetooth keyboards and mice.

Most of all though, the US press release shed more details on the all-important background downloading feature for the PlayStation Store. Users will be able to queue up to six downloads at one time, which coincidentally matches the Xbox 360's maximum queue. Progress of these downloads can be followed under a new Download Management section that will reside under the Cross Media Bar's Network icon. While you won't be able to play a game while downloads work in the background, you will be able to watch video, view images, listen to music and browse the web at the same time.

The update is set for release on this coming Thursday, March 22nd.

    That's a bit of a let down.

Apple.com is showing the stock 1.25s as shipping in "4-6 weeks" so that's still on target for October sometime.

I saw this posted earlier (can't find it easily now).

However, I'd trade the ability to own an iPod and use Google while young for a billionaire father any day. Seems like, sooner or later (sooner, given Ballmer's rotundness), you'd be able to buy all the iPods you wanted.
The advantage of having a billionaire father though is that in 15 years they're going to sue his arse off for mental trauma. All the kids in the playground are saying "Did you see that cool vid on Google?" or "Have you checked out the new iTunes Discovery Download?". Traumatic for a hip kid. Although if it's Ballmer's kids......:D

I got the following news item by a quick search in Google.
"Although Microsoft presents NT as a homegrown OS, NT is actually much older than its official 1993 birthdate. NT contains architectural and design influences from another company's flagship OS. Interestingly, throughout the 1990s, Digital introduced many NT features to VMS, and Microsoft has added VMS developments to NT. For example, VMS featured native clustering support in 1984, and 64-bit memory and system APIs in 1996. Microsoft did not introduce clustering support to NT until late last year_and only on a limited scale_and several years might pass before Microsoft releases 64-bit NT."

    Interesting..

are there alternatives to these scripts?

i'd like to get F@H setup on a couple of rigs here at work and it's generally better to keep the terminal hidden so people don't kill it.

    I would hope so!! ;)

There have been reports of GPU's burning up from the heat while on standby. I had to move the wii as it was in the direct downwind of the PS3, which didnt help any. It's warm to the touch even when on standby.

But when they show it at the reunion, the dad gets even more teary eyed, but the son won't give him a hug in front of everyone, so the dad has to randomly hug and cry with a lot of other family members.

    Funny. :D

Yea I laughed a few times too, good ad. I wish Apple would get off the high and mighty clean and elegant simplicity ads and make real ones like this one. The iDVD spot was the best thev'e done.

Crackdown is more 'fun' than GTA. You are not limited by do missions A, B, C, D, E, F before you can get to next area. It's far more 'free' that GTA has ever been.

For someone with a lot of games you're sure missing the formula for a game.

Do something, get a reward. Do something better, get a bigger reward.

I like the Castlevania style play of everything being open to the player, you just have to upgrade yourself with various skills to get to them places. Certainly enhances the feeling of freedom. There's just no feeling of "oo I can't wait to get to place X" in Crackdown.

Now the world has really turned upsidedown...

Wasn't it Michael Dell who wanted to have Apple close up shop and sell the stock back to its shareholders only back in February?

Now Dell is doing its best to give Apple visibility, and sales!

I was thinking about another little widget, or build this into the folding tracker. A widget that lets you know/or you can see if there was a post in one of the folding threads and click on the thread name and you go straight to the MacRumors distributed computing forums!

How about $300 desktops and $600 laptops?

I knew this wouldn't take long, why is it that people just can't accept the fact that Apple products are worth their cost. Must be a PC thing, because every PC user I know throws that in my face. They think everything should be little or no cost, face it, Apple is a quality machine not some POS box made up of cheapest bidder parts.

On the original poster's thought....NO. They shouldn't expand into products that don't integrate well with the Mac.

I don't understand you guys, you say that Windows XP is now stable and maybe you are right, and you say that PC's are faster and the hardware is the same quality for less money.

I am getting close to replacing my old iMac and I have always been a Mac person, but maybe you are right PC's are better now. My buddy has had crappy luck with his, but it is a low priced one. I am going to keep my iBook. I have a Windows computer running 98 at the school where I teach, I don't like it, but I have never done anything with XP and from what you say and what I have started to read, XP sounds like an excellent operating system, just as good as OSX, and with lower prices and much better hardware I am going to seriously look at a new PC this winter and test it out. What is the best PC right now? Dell? Gateway? I have always been hell-bent against PC's, but when all I read anymore on Mac message boards is how good they have become then I need to go and check it out. I would prefer an all-in-one like my iMac. Gateway has the new Profile...does any other PC maker make a one-in-all?

I have always believed in buying the best product that offered more value, I have been a Mac guy, but when I hear Macs suck and PC's are better from people that actually like Macs and are not trolls, then I really have got to wonder, have I been wrong all along? and to think I just talked a buddy into a new iMac, I did not realize that PC's were this good now. He hated his old PC, but now they have became way faster then the Mac and more stable, I hope he will not be mad at me.

Haha, i seem to have started quite a healthy discussion here, but as usual I've gone off and forgotten about it for a few days.

I've always remembered the phrase "jack of all trades, master of none"... this is apparent in devices like my mobile phone.

It's a Sony Ericsson K600i. It has not one, but two cameras on it, a built in high-speed 3G modem, and the ability to play MP3/AAC (maybe even WMA) files.

The pitfalls of this device are, the camera is awful, there's only about 2MB onboard memory so playing any albums is out of the question... of course when it comes to the telephony side it's fine. I can send texts, place calls and browse the internet (even on my powerbook via bluetooth!)

My point is - I would LOVE this device to be able to do everything, but I can't see any phone camera beating my Canon for the next 10 years....

On the original poster's thought....NO. They shouldn't expand into products that don't integrate well with the Mac.

I never said the "products" wouldn't integrate well with the mac
If Apple made a phone/camera/printer/gps/car it would presumably integrate very well with the mac!

    http://www.nokia.com/A4136001?newsid=1054096

    Thanks for that link Blue!

The BBC ran an article (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/5048966.stm) on that survey and some of the numbers weren't quite so impressively in favour of one-device when you broke them down more by country etc. 87% of Americans wanted their devices to remain separate (tough to see in context whether it was just phone/camera or all functions) whereas those in India had a majority in favour of keeping them separate.
    Statistics... huh!

I'd say that's maybe because the average American can afford to buy 10 devices whereas your average Indian might be a little less wealthy?

I certainly would prefer one device that did it all - but only if it did it all well.

What I meant was for $1899 you get a very fast well built Mac that with the new Os will allow you go right to work, with a DVD burner, a software you can do REAL work with! Oh Yeah and the new Macs With X.2 are now truly twice a fast, at least in my tests with real work. Point me to ANY PC with included great software, a DVD burner, and awesome case, gig ethernet, an included firewire setup that works with drives and cameras for even $1699! I'm not talking a custom built pccee with a cheapo box, thats not the same thing. If you think it is then you haven't been doing real work, you're surfing the net and playing games something that the Imac or emac excells at for less money, peace

Myspace.com is the most popular online site for personal space, especially for young people within the 18-24 demographic and is owned by one of the worlds largest media corporations, NewsCorp.

Now why would myspace, home to millions of Fox viewers, want to sell Fox shows through a free medium owned by investors to both?

    Excellent advice! Thank you.

I also have a friend who said that ATI cards suck when it comes to Linux.

I think if I HAD more experience with compiling kernals and what not, I'd probably go Gentoo or Ubuntu... My buddy uses Debian and Fedora Core exclusively.

I just have to figure out what case to use (around 150 bucks) that looks like a home theater componant.
