I don't hate pda's. I hate how everyone just always hyped up the Apple PDA and nothing really happened. I would definately buy a Apple PDA when it comes out again.

Well, WEP is kind of junk, as know, but I think the general reasons for using encryption above access control are:

    1) Packets can be sniffed and analyzed to give access to sensitive info when just MAC is used (not too relevant to DS)

    2) Packets can be sniffed and the MAC address can be extracted and spoofed (more of an issue).

Makes sense, wasn't occuring to me that the packets would obviously not be encrypted then.

I'll probably play with WEP then. The two together should be plenty for me. Doubt I am close to many network hackers anyway...

I think it was Back2TheMac who posted earlier in this thread "x86 plain sucks". The reason why he belives the x86 ISA and CISC are inferior is because Apple put out a bunch of marketing in the early days of the PowerPC touting RISC as superior new technology. In today's world, RISC processos really aren't RISC, and CISC processors really are CISC.

I recommend anyone who still believes in this spin to read this:

    It's most informative.
    Enjoy

Dont you think that chip would be a little to hot... . Well, I fully agree with OS X being the best. But the OS and the quality apps are all that is going for apple. Apple lacks speed, but I cant blame apple for that (stupid moto :rolleyes, but I can blame them for not dumping moto a long time ago. If apple computer were just as fast as PCs there is no way I would think about getting near a 'peecee', but they arent as fast ...

What are you doing that requires so much speed. Do you bill clients by the hour? Do you continually render files that take hours? I'm curious to know why people who harp about speed really need it.

It's one thing to be able to attach earning to the speed of a computer but quite another to want a fast computer just for bragging rights.

Just face the facts. We may or may not see new Apple displays soon... there was no substantial evidence of new displays today, all there was was an expired special on them, and if you recall it isnt the first special to expire without new ones being released.

I fully agree that this site is less than ideal in it's rating system. My points are:

    1. Here is, as far as I can tell, a not particularly Mac friendly site that compares the performance of Macs vs. PC's.

    2. Based on these ratings, an iMac is actually the best buy for middle of the pack machines.

    3. Again, based on these ratings, the top of the line Mac and P4 machines are closely matched in performance.

    4. These conclusions are probably more significant in that they are based on data from a site that is not pro-Mac.

My personal benchmarking tool is SETI@home (http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/).

I let it rip on my 1.25GHz G4 last night and set a record for the MacRumors team: the "Average CPU time per work unit" was a new low: 5 hr 52 min 11.2 sec.

I can see that SETI@home made use of the dual processors because my elapsed time (5 hr 10 min per unit) was less than my CPU time!

Check out the numbers at http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/stats/team/team_139691.html. My member name is (surprise surprise) "Doctor Q".

Alrighty, since this thing got way too popular on Digg, I've had a lot of people trying to offer advice. A great deal more are saying this is all fake.

First of all, I am not breaking into my neighbor's house. I will not stoop to their level. I will not trash their place, spray paint their living room, nor leave dog droppings in their fridge. I will either let the police deal with this or let the stupidity of the criminals catch up with them in the end.

Second, I am not getting a lawyer. The amount it would cost me to get a lawyer would be way more than the cost of the 360 and games. This just doesn't make sense. The only reason I would get one is if they catch the guy and there is some sort of trial. Even then, I don't think I would need a lawyer, it would just be me testifying in court or something.

And finally, I don't really care if you think I am making this all up. The burglar broke in, took an Xbox and some games and left a good deal of other expensive stuff in the house. If you read the rest of my posts before saying "OMG WTF LIARZ WHO STEALZ JST A XBOX AND LEAVES A MACBOOK" you would know the situation. The cops have been following any leads I have given them, and things have happened.

If I get my Xbox back, wonderful. That is money that I don't have to spend replacing it. If I never see it again, oh well, life goes on.

I guess what I really wanted by getting this on Digg and all was some actual advice on what I should do now. Again, all I have gotten was advice from 15 year olds saying to throw bricks at my neighbor's house. This is not exactly the advice I was looking for and if anyone has any REAL advice to offer, that would be wonderful (such as names and numbers of someone at Microsoft).

I posted this on Macrumors because of the great community we have here. People are always friendly and open to discussion. Sometimes issues get solved, other times they don't. If getting this story on Digg brought some new (and unwanted) members to the forums, I am sorry.

Anyway, thanks for reading my post and I'll continue to update as things progress. :)

Well, at last count I had 23 computers, but I don't use all of them.

In my computer area I have the following (up and running 24/7):PowerBook G3 (Wallstreet) - which is my main system
IBM ThinkPad 760ED - runs Rhapsody for work tasks, OPENSTEP for school (Geomview)
PowerBook Duo 2300c - main school system (runs Mathematica and Theorist)
SGI Indy - where I do my video capture
Power Macintosh 8100 - where I run all my classic apps
iMac - back up for my Wallstreet, and the system with all my games
Quadra 950 - back up for classic apps, and CD burning
Power Macintosh 7500 - primary Rhapsody systemso that is all the running systems (going around the room), I also have set up (but not running all the time) the following:Sun SPARCclassic - used for practicing with Solaris and StarOffice
SGI IRIS Indigo (Morse) - back up for older SGI apps
SGI IRIS Indigo (Euler) - for older SGI apps
Quadra 700 - A/UX system, for running System 7 apps (the 950 is Mac OS 8 and PowerPC now)And the rest are currently in storage. I also spend time on my wife's PowerBook G3 (Pismo), but I don't do any work on it.

On the subject of GodBless... did he ever post anything related to the topic of the thread?

And I have SETI running on a couple of my systems (the 8100 and the iMac, the two I'm on the least). There is more evidence of extraterrestrial life (in some form) than there is of a deity (in any form)... although the odds of intelligent life putting out a signal that we could find during the brief time we've been looking seems remote (specially looking at our planet where we have started cutting down on the signals that bleed out into space). There would be a 50 (or so) year window and it would have had to have happened on some other world almost exactly as many years ago as they are far away from us (in light years).

So I run SETI... but I don't really expect them to find anything.

And as we are cutting down on our signals bleeding into space, I wouldn't expect some future alien race to have much luck spotting us either. :(

I totally agree. It's great they're using the idea but they did this with the command+tab thing to some other guy in 10.3(?) - they could have at least given him some money or a job or something...?

Yeah, man, it's terrible that Apple is using ideas that they've had since System 1.0 in 1984 and implementing them in a way that's consistent with thier current look and feel. Shame on them for using the OS X design and polish on it, too, when Arlo worked for them and learned his UI from being an Apple designer! Oh, wait, that's right...

Daring Fireball already disected this in detail and basically shows hor stupid this line of argument is, but the simple fact is that Arlo was stealing ideas and basically set himself up for failure from the get-go. Apple has long had small applications with limited functionality in their system releases, and this is just an expansion of their implementation to make it even easier for people to write applications or applets for the mac. Attacking them for it means you need to go after Automator and any AppleScript, too, since they're just rehashing of things that other people have done.

If it's a better product that's because they're better programmers but they can't just go round ripping people off like that - i doubt he had any kind of patent on it, but it's really bad practice...

Arlo was an Apple programmer, took what he learned, and made a product in the third party space that was, from what some people say, already in development. Also, if you know anything about what Dashboard is an how it works, it's vastly superior to Konfabulator.
