When Alphatech was aboard MacRumors, he was awesome in 2001 and early great in late all right in early 2003... he's one of those people that takes no bulls*** from others. During 2001 and into much of MacRumors was a small community with few people at 1000 posts, and few stupid people/total newbs existed back then to get on his nerves. But what happened was he got fed up with people and/or newbs that didn't read his posts correctly, didn't answer his questions, tried arguing with him when he was right, etc., epsecially since the number of arguments that occurred/number of people that gave him a hard time increased. Effectively, he got real sick of it and moved over to the pub.

I suppose there's only so much copy you can get from "Vista delayed again" and "Intel announces new processors, available in 2008".

If the BBC has a bias, I would say it's against the Open-Source movement. The only OSS product they ever report on is Firefox.

I have a brand-new PowerMac G5 dual 2.3Ghz computer on the way and if it would be of use I am interested in joining!
Your PM will love you for giving it something to do with its idle time. You will get nothing but respect from your fellow folders and will be able to taunt (or get taunted by) them now and again.
There's no dark side about fodling. You, my friend, have seen the light. I'm awaiting the moment you step in to it before I wish you a warm welcome.

    ;) :D

you can kill, maim, or severely maim your apple pro mouse, macbandit, and get this (http://www.maccessories.com/products/pro_mic_d1081.html)... all the style of mac, with a less insulting-to-your-intelligence button layout. it's really a lot of fun to use, and costs about the same as a pro mouse (says 65, i got mine for 60).

I was finally in the market for an iPod recently. I was planning on getting a 5GB iPod after the 20GB was introduced. When I went to the Apple retail store, they had both the original 5GB and 10GB version for reduced prices. They were charging $349 for a first run 10GB iPod, then quoted me $299 for a refurbished model. After that I got it for $269 with a student discount. So I walked out the door with a 10GB iPod for the price of a current 5GB iPod, after taking into account my student discount. Caveat emptor: new technology will be faster or larger with less cost.

I lucked out with my purchase as the Apple Retail Employee wasn't sure he should have given me my discount for ecucation when he did, but since he hadn't heard anything against it, he did it anyway.

I believe I've read Apple makes the bulk of its income selling hardware. MacOS X is the software that makes that possible. If Apple permitted standard PCs to run MacOS X, several things would probably happen:
    1. Apple hardware sales would initially plummet, killing Apple's revenue stream.
    2. The user experience using MacOS X on Intel would be terrible as Apple would then have to deal with the plethora of hardware incompatibilities in the Wintel world.
    3. Apple would be seen as a direct competitor to Microsoft, creating the expected Microsoft reaction, and subsequent marketing campaign pointing out those problems and how they work better currently using Windows XP, so why change?
    4. The world would then realize that the reason that Apple's products have been so good is that Apple controls both the hardware and the OS, and stop buying the Intel version of MacOS X.

So, would Apple's $4.3B last long enough for this trauma to work its wait out and permit Apple to return to its closed hardware/OS solution?

It's an interesting thought, that of Apple Macs and Intel Macs in the marketplace. Would Microsoft stand by and permit this? Microsoft has never failed to use its monopoly clout to squash/influence competitors in the past, and I don't doubt they would have private talks with software developers would might think about developing software for this new platform. I think we could forget about Office for Mactel, or Office for Mac, for that matter.

A more realistic, if still far out alternative, is that Apple is simply covering its bases by preserving the ability to switch processors, while retaining control of the box. This means replace the PPC with an Intel chip, maintain a Mac ROM, continue to sell an integrated package that's better than a Wintel solution. That probably wouldn't be as compelling a solution as today's PPC-integrated box, but it would allow Apple to continue selling hardware.

I don't think we'll ever see Apple offering the MacOS to the generic Intel world.

If OS X can run on x86, why not come out with Apple brand computers built on x86 in addition to those based on the PPC. Then Apple would not be at the mercy of one company or one chip. It would put pressure on both PPC and x86 sides to put out better hardware and WE THE CUSTOMERS AND APPLE WOULD BE THE WINNERS! It would also end the debate whether the x86 or PPC architecture is fastest.

I could see it now. Jobs giving a keynote address with a x86 machine and a PPC machine both running OS X side by side, both Apple branded machines. Heck, add the Power4 to the mix too. Apple should end up with an OS that scales from an entry level machine to workstation powerhouse. Heck, there are plenty of people who would buy a quad processor Mac if it were offered. I'm not talking about making OS X available to run on older existing PCs or those offered by other companies. That way, Apple is not going to cannablize their hardware sales.

Jobs could then have a x86 machine running OS X dual it out with a x86 machine running Windows using programs like Office, Photoshop, etc. Then the operating system would be the focus of attention not the GHz speed. Even if the windows machine was slightly cheaper and faster, the Mac has a better user interface, more stable OS, and lower total cost of ownership. (I use and own both PCs and Mac and know this from experience)

The bottom line is this - We don't care what CPU is inside - PPC, Intel, AMD, Power4. All we care about is OS, speed, and price. Jobs, give us options 'cause WE TOO LIKE OPTIONS!

Also, once they get the cd to their house and they want to rip files to their terabyte harddisk drive... it would take how long (an hour?) to do so?
I think bandwidth is a worthy matter to consider... IMHO.

We all know MAC can't compete with Hardware, but we have some of the best programs on the market. That is how Steve going to use it for his ads campaign.

I read article at macworld.com the other, Apple will never make OS for PC. Check out this article: http://maccentral.macworld.com/news/0209/11.haddad.php

I am not complaining with the speed of the new Powermac, but I wouldn't mind to be faster. Faster is always better.

With ipod release for PC. Apple will make tons of money. And maybe use that money and invest in developing new Hardware.

Anybody has a stat. sell of Gateway Profile 4 and Apple imac? I want to see who is winning...

I would wait (and in fact I am). It wouldn't hurt to just hang in there for 2 more months to see if this rumoured May Premium price drop and Zephyr model comes true and you might just save yourself a bundle in the process.

There will be an imac update no later than mwsf. i am not sure we will see 19'' imacs that soon (if ever), but apple needs to do something to show that the imac is better than its pc equivalents.

    Hi all,

I recently got a new computer at work with a core 2 duo proc. Unfortunately we do everything with Windows at work. I'm already running the single core version of the no-nonsense text console. How can I use both cores/have two instances of F@H running? I've always been a Mac guy, so don't know a lot about Windows (because it really annoys me!!), so please walk me through this installation! BTW, I'm using XP on this pc.

    Best regards, Dreadnought

P.s. I'm back folding 24/7 (with the pc@work) and claim back my position in the top 50. So look out 4JNA, Atszyman and Redeye

At least this update is actually worth updating to. Ability to turn off auto-load, download at least 6 things in the background while doing something else, etc. WOOHOO can't wait! :D Now we have to wait until Home...

Great suggestion! Thats the kind of thing I was looking for! DLing now.

While I agree that I would like more content and use for WiiConnect24, we all have to keep in mind that the Wii is still in very early stages of its life. Look how long it took Xbox Live to become really useful and full featured. You can't expect Nintendo to roll out a fully featured online interface within the first few months of its life.

Give them a change, things will get better.

Agreed. Just had a bad feeling about it.

Well, the 1.5GHz G4 is out. Yes, it's overclocked, but it appears to be fairly stable. Following the overclockability-to-future-product releases-scale (which has now proved true the last several product announcements), we could easily see 1.5GHz G4s in the next revision.
