That said, if they did it as others have suggested, I'd be tempted to get it. Here's the specs I'd like to see (based somewhat on earlier posts, so I apologize for duplication):
- a single 1 GHz G4 based on the PPC 7470
- true DDR system bus as well as memory
- 256 MB of memory
- a 32 MB or 64 MB GF4 MX
- base model with CD-RW
- 10/100 Mbps Ethernet instead of Gigabit, and the 56K modem is optional
- the single ATA100 controller
- include only OS X and any freeware/shareware apps by default, but give the option of AppleWorks and other apps at discounted prices
If Apple could do that, and drop the prices on their LCDs as well, they'd probably have a lot of sales coming their way. They'd just have to make sure that their all-in-one systems have incentives for people who don't mind integration.
that would be great
i would also like to see apple keep the crt imac around and eventually keep lowering the price until it got down to $499 USD
and along the way, it would be nice to up the processor up to 800 mhz, up level 2 cache to 512k so it can decently run os x, and get a flat screen crt...i think it would sell
as a plan, i would release it as a 700 mhz flat screen crt imac for $699 this fall with 512k level 2 cache and cd-rw
...drop price to $599 and scale to 800 mhz by mwsf
...drop price one hundred dollars in summer of 2003 for back to school crowd
we need something to compete will circuit city's five hundred dollar hp/compaq basic machines which are going 1.2/1.3 ghz...while their pcs may have the speed advantage at the five hundred dollar price point, the mac will have the built in monitor which the pcs don't have
(also if we can't reach $499 USD, then how about $599 USD but a 1 ghz g3 flat screen crt imac?)

Welcome to the team! Here is our team stats http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_summary.php?s=&t=3446
Have fun folding! Also we have a script and a widget if you are intrested. The script starts folding on boot up http://calnet.sdsu.edu/mc68k/
And our widget has a thread in Distributed Computing.
I got the widget! What does that script do? Can't I just put Folding@home in my list of programs to start at login? Or is this different?

After typing start1 and start2, you need to type exit to leave that session.
Quitting terminal after typing exit won't stop the folding.
Thanks! I already restarted after I typed crontab -l, but that didn't work. F@H now works, with a closed terminal window!

As a mac user one thing has always sucked is support from cell phone companies and providers for wireless data support! Sadly it's forced me to carry a Vaio laptop just so I can use wireless data from Nextel. Nextel has an unlimited rate plan for $60 a month and it works anywhere you have coverage! My gripe is that Motorola has 100% of the Nextel phone market and they even own a chunk of Nextel.... Since Motorola also builds the chips in most Macs wouldn't it make sense to offer support for macs! How hard could it be to write a driver or applet to use wireless data on macs! With OS X it shouldn't be that hard... Even on the PC side the apps aren't all that flashy!
Just my two cents.... Had to vent!
Kevin Leidecker
P.S. I don't spell good.... Consider any spelling or grammar mistakes part of a dialect, much like you would a good novel!

Excellent job my good man! Thanks for the Fidget (folding widget)! Now for all those Panther lackeys, you in fact CAN run widgets if you are at version 10.3.9. Check out Amnesty Widget Browser (http://www.mesadynamics.com/amnesty.htm). You don't get the cool dashboard effect, but you can play with widgets. Fold if ya got 'em!

...I'll just be happy if it manages to fix my screwed up ICQ lists. I can tell when people come online, and they can chat with me, but I cannot initiate a chat with them.
I'd be ecstatic if I could paste in screenshots. I use that in iChat every day.

I've installed the client on a few machines that have a lot of idle time, with the promise that if they ever cause any problems they will be removed.
Time to make some problems and regain my spot @ #38! :D I'm coming for you atszyman! Watch your back (or your computers)!

Hi Redeye,
I have come accross another bug, or it's my dual G5... or Atszyman is spoking me out! Like he's ever gonna catch up with me!
This is the case: I have three folding widgets running for over a week now, no problem in that week. I have three because I want to monitor someone behind me (Atszyman) and my next overtake in front of me. But when I just looked all three widgets where on Atszyman.
I had this problem too. It must be how it stores the data.

I have the floor pad too. It worked for an aerobics game and World Class Track Meet. I belive it was called the Power Pad. My NES still works, and I play Ninja Turtles 2 with friends on it quite a bit.

I sure hope they're right...not that I mind chipping paint. When I buy a pb, it'll be well used, and have lots of scratches. Thats my style;) But that'll be important for others.
As for the educational discounts an attempt to flush inventory...wouldn't it be easier to empty inventory by offering discounts to everyone?
I put off buying a new powerbook for fall semester...better not make me wait until jan for a minor speed bump! Gimme more!:D

Just play oblivion with the pc version on a imac or mac pro with boot camp. The ps3 version isn't really all that.
Uh, it isn't in stores yet.. so I'm sure you've played it a ton and know this for a fact.
My thread wasn't a 360/pc/ps3 oblivion differences thread, but just an Oblivion thread. I only mentioned ps3 because I haven't played it on the other 2 platforms yet, and was thinking of getting it because I don't have a ps3 rpg yet.
It won't get to stores until today or tomorrow.

I dunno . . . maybe my need for "office" applications is not as serious as other folks, but why would an average Mac OS X user need 'M$ Office' when something like 'OpenOffice.org (http://www.openoffice.org/)' is available?
I grant you that I don't do a lot of things with "office" applications so I can't say with absolute certainty there are no problems with it, but I have yet to have a problem exchanging documents with people who use M$ Office.

Update: Both drives are not only announced (at least in Asia), but shown. To quote Macnn:
Pioneer displayed both DVR-K11RZ (tray-loading notebook SuperDrive with 2x/2x/8x DVD-RW and 16x/10x/24x CD-RW functions) and its 3.5" desktop DVR-105RZ (4x/2x/12x DVD-RW and 16x/10x/40x CD-RW).
* A "traverse mechanism" (slot-loading?) version of the notebook SuperDrive drive appears to be even smaller and is due to begin production in December 2002 with 2x/2x/8x DVD-RW and 16x/10x/24x CD-RW functions.

heh, Apple can barely offer a 17" for $1000 ....

Came to the thread looking for info on that rumored new 360…
…found a bunch of people fighting over format and consoles preferences.
It's getting more teadious everyday to filter the bickering out to get to the on-topic info.
Back on topic. Cooler 360 and not the original DVD drive = more silent 360? I find my original to be a little bit too noisy as I often play it with low sound volume. I'll be waiting for more official info.
Agreed. :o
Yeah, the current white 360s manufactured in or after Dec'06 have the new BenQ drive which is supposedly a quieter DVD drive.
With [these] new 360s reportedly being cooler (but no evidence whether they switched to 65nm processors or not), I'm sure as a whole - yes, these will certainly be more quiet than what's out now.

Maybe it's just me...but I don't get all these new search tools.
Google, Apple, MS, and now this company....all releasing supercharged search tools. I use the search tool maybe twice a month...but I never have trouble finding anything on either my home Mac, or my Mac at work. Are the rest of you people THAT unorganized? LOL
