Is it just my computers, or does it seem that we are all getting only Tinkers recently?
My numbers have gone from an all time high, to a new low recently, and our team stats have tanked as well. Looks like the other teams will have no problem passing us now if things stay the way they are going now!
I got slammed too. All the recent Tinkers I have gotten have taken at least 24 hours to process on my 2.3. I was excited to see how fast my machine would crank through them, but the first one I got on my new Mac took 3+ days!! :)
Again, put to shame.

It's a different matter on my campus. About half the laptops I've seen on the Cal campus are Macs. It's much more than a "small poket" here to say the least!
i couldn't imagine a school, if i had to guess off the top of my head, that would be more mac friendly than cal

.... Anyone remember Firewire? ....Seeing as how virtually every HDTV settop box and digital camcorder ships with FireWire--both markets still in their infancy--I would say that quite a few people remember FireWire.

There will be a line of Motorola MPC8500 (G5) processors. The only questions are: 1) when, and 2) will they appear in Macs.
A1: They are shipping and have been for a while. A2: No, current 85xx chips are totally unsuitable for Macs. They lack things such as floating point units, which really does lower the ol Photoshop performance, doesn't it. :)
Here is an example: 8540.
http://e-www.motorola.com/webapp/sps/site/prod_summary.jsp?code=MPC8540&nodeId=01M98655
And the similar 8560:
http://e-www.motorola.com/webapp/sps/site/prod_summary.jsp?code=MPC8560&nodeId=01M98657
The chips aren't even high-clocking. Moto lists 1ghz as the Max, not good at all, certainly not much of a G5.
I do not see any reason why a G4 exactly as we know it except fabbed on 90nm or 130nm processes would not be entirely suitable for iBooks, iMacs and PBooks for some time. There is no need to reinvent the wheel if IBM is going to come in and do the high-end chips. Let Moto be slow, thats fine for some models.

i missed the humor... not very funny imo. It was just lame.
You pretty much captured my feelings.
Somebody wasted a lot of time on this.

Hi there. Well, I'd like to be able to set up my apartment so a heavy locking mechanism is on the door, and reacts to an RFID card through the wall. Should someone enter without the RFID access, I'd like for a camera to start recording and upload the feed to a server.
Doable?

Youtube works oh-so much better. On the trial version if I opened the video to full screen it would stop playing about half way through. Now it plays the full vid.
This is top. I like this. Hope the 360 takes note, though how much of a pain would it be operating a web browser without a mouse?
Yeah, flash video would crash my entire Wii about 1/3 of the time. I just noticed the blue glow coming from the cabinet my Wii is in, so I'll update it in a while and grab the new browser.

The iBook is a great portable for mac users. The PB is a more than decent desktop replacement for mac users.
I work in photoshop on a tibook and i totally
agree. powerbook for anything professional
or the ibook for more of a hobby. I love my

I am in the same boat as you. I just sold my G4 533mhz in anticipation of the new powerbooks coming out. I also happen to be a college student and it pains me to be without a computer to call my own but I can wait. I think one of the biggest signs that apple is going out with the old and in with the new is that the $200 educational discount special that they are running ends on 9/25/02, hence an early october release. Cross your fingers, I can't wait (just hope I have the money by then)

Actually, it did. I only worked there for the summer (3 months) so i only had to go without posting on MR for 3 months. If i was still working their i don't know how long i could of held out. I would of probably got a new username that was not linked to me in anyway.

I'm going to give it another shot. Didn't do much for me on the Playstation, bu then I got it at the same time as FF7 and the original Resident Evil (and Parrapa the Rappa :) ) so it didn't get much play time...

Blu-Ray is outselling HD DVD 3:1 right now, there are more blu-ray movies than HD DVD, 20 of the 25 top movies are on blue ray while 1 is on HD DVD. 1 Studio has given exclusive support to HD DVD, 5 are on Blu-Rays side.. HD DVD will start to phase out by years end, by Christmas next year i doubt any retailer will sell them, short of the discount outlets that sell the things that won't sell in mainstream retail. look around, ive posted a ton of articles from Neilson, and other reputable sources and analysts that basically say the same thing.
This is why no imo HD DVD is integrated, MS is smart enough not to include a dying technology and then piss their customer base off again with the same machine...
Ed
Still far too early to count either format out.
Very smart move by Sony to put Blu-Ray in the PS3, looks expensive at 1st glance but quite cheap for a games console + next gen DVD player.
Microsoft should offer a range of 360 consoles, with the core at the bottom and a HD-DVD equpped machine at the top.

is it me, or does macrumors seem more impersonal these days?
while some of the back and forth from the old days like john123 vs spikey and kela, or alphatech vs newbies were sometimes not very friendly, people here had a community and were familiar with each other
now that macrumors is approaching 20,000 members, is there still the same sense of community?
..or does it seem weird because i am the last person standing from macrumor's first six months and from the first year there are perhaps less than half a dozen of us?
