Having been a bystander for a while, I've been drawn in to the world of MacRumors. So here I am... See y'all around...

If our, and their status stays the way it is, the Nights who Say Ni are no longer threatening to pass us up in the Folding team challange!!
We have 3 teams at our back door, and if everything stays status quo we will be passed in 23 days! so more power is needed!
I have just added a 3ghz to the team, and it looks like many others have just recently started to fold again!! Lets keep it going and see if we can hold our position, and possibly pass up an other team!! :D

I love The Onion. I also love the fact that we can get the paper edition in San Francisco now. I read it every week.

I can't wait to see how much this goes for. That is one of the best mods I've seen.

you forgot to put *** CONFIRMED *** anywhere in there.
Try sending it Mac OS Rumors for their weekly update of meaningless facts, speculation and old news. It might pep the site up a bit :D
Okay, that was cruel, I'm sure a lot of people still go there purely for the entertainment value.

mc64k, I here a new challenge for you! Make your scripts to work native for Intel Macs!!
mc68k's scripts work on anything that will run a proper UNIX shell. They could care less what processor is running. There is a lot more to getting the FORTRAN source code from the (s)Tinker core to be compiled and work properly. Obviously, they got it running on Mac OS X but not running well. I'm sure they have plans but not enough time or money to get things going.
As for folding on laptop computers, I've had good luck running on my PowerBook, but I've been using a USB thumbdrive thingee instead of taxing the internal hard drive which is already overworked.

was funny watching all these pre-press guys bitching and moaning about transparencies...
Just wait until they see Quark's implementation of transparencies in Xpress 7...
Tears before bedtime. :D

The only real benefit the G4 has over the PPC970 is the L3 cache. The PPC970 really doesn't need it half as much though.

still waiting on a 64-Bit SMP client
I thought it was 64-bit? After all there is no 32 bit linux version yet so I would think the OS X version is 64 bit.

Be sure to order it from a place with a good return policy:
http://www.macprices.com/
compares prices and availability. Call each vendor and compare return policies. Because if a newer model does come out, you'd want to pay the least amount on the return possible if you want to trade up.

I'd say apple are goin to eliminate the crt imac by then.Correct me if im wrong but isnt the snow white model the only one that remains and i dont think the graphics chip is even Quartz Extreme compliant?Itll probably be read its last rites very soon.its a pity cos my computer teacher loved that little crt model and for some strange reason has it in for the eMac...dont ask me why.

What? No Dynamic Link Libraries in the MacOS X? You've got to be kidding me. That's a very bad choice on Apple's part. Especially since UNIX has their own type of DLL's. The whole point of a DLL is to make it so that programs don't need to load the same exact libraries into memory and waste space... the standard C library alone is about 2 megs. And the speed benefit from static libraries versus dynamic in *nix is nill. I know, I've compiled the same library both ways just to test that fact. (For those that don't know, static libraries are compiled into an app, and dynamic libraries are stored only once in memory.)
The point you had said before was that the reason x86 sucked was that it was 25 year old technology. Your exact wording was:
Don't assume anything about the quality of a 25 year old architecture. X86 blows crap, and always will.

Anyone else folding this protein (project 2363)? It's a double gromacs core project, and on my 1.8DP G5 it's taking 1:09 per percent! I.e., a 4.9 day folding project! It's not listed on the folding@home website, so I can's see how many points it's worth.

A MacBook would be sweet to see announced.
Indeed, that is what I was also hoping to see announced. :)

also, posts made in the poliwar forum no longer count towards post count. many people dropped from '6502' to 'member.' many older members, such as b2tm lost thousands on their post count.

A lot of people complain about Apple's displays being too expensive.
Others complain that you can buy similar quality ones for less.
My complaint is the lack of connectivity options.
Most other displays 17" and up have at least a DVI and a VGA connection.
Some have two DVIs, and some even have composite & S-video too.
I remember when SGI's excellent 17.3" widescreen display was out, it used a propietary connection which required a new video card, but they later made an adapter so you could hook up, DVI, VGA and even HDTV to it.
I don't see Apple putting more connections to their monitors anytime soon, but maybe when the new ones make their debut, they could also come with a $250 or less adapter that would have ADC/w DVI adaptor included, VGA and S-video/w composite adapter included.
Thought's? Flames?http://img.ranchoweb.com/images/veronica/ppphhht.gif

So the previous "beta" releases on the Mac were just alphas? Interesting. How long has Opera 8 been in the making? I am surprised that they're already releasing it, but maybe it just feels short.

You people keep on telling that many PC's are a lot faster and produce less noice.
Now tel me where on the internet can I compare PC's with Macs, when it comes to speed. Where on the www can I find the exact speed of any PC in Gigaflops?
At the office I use a new 2.5 Ghz Pentium 4. And yes it's fast.
But sometimes it is harder to use, and that makes it slower in the end.
I do think that the gap between PC and Mac is closing more and more.
And maybe some day the mac will not be worth the extra money, you have to pay for it.
