After seeing all of the MacRumors folders, I thought I'd give it a try.
At first I tried downloading the terminal version, that was over my head, so I got rid of that and switched to the Graphical version (NON-screensaver).

Now I don't know what preferences I'm supposed to set...

I figured out the identity settings (I'm EricNau and my team is set to "3446" (MacRumors).

As for the Proxy settings; I don't even know what a proxy is. (As far as networking and Internet goes; I'm clueless). I'm I supposed to use a proxy server, if so, how do I set it up? Does it make a difference?

Should I allow WU larger than 5 MB? (I'm using the iMac in my sig)

What number of polygons should I set, and what should my checkpoint frequency be?

Finally, what view should I set; Spacefilled, Ball & Stick, Wireframe, or Alpha Trace? I don't really care what it looks like, I just want to cut down on wasted CPU usage (as it is much better used to fold). Will Hiding the entire window help?

    Thanks.

I am a fresh folder as well. I had a couple question but in the desire of saving a new thread I was wondering if anyone could help.

I just downloaded the .dmg of folding and tonight is my first experience folding so I have got the protein started but I have a couple of questions.

First off, I know that on the FAQ page it says that this program will not over heat your computer as long as it is properly cooled. However I am on a 2-yr old PB that is my main and only machine so with recent posts and threads talking about HD failure after a couple of years it gets me a little concerned. I assume however that this is not a HD intensive only processor intensive which I am more comfortable with but still I would like to know the realistic amount of wear and tear on which components of my machine.

Second according to my calculations the progress is 0.25 after 30 minutes of time. Wouldn't that mean this protein would take 200 hrs? (30x4=120mins(0.25x4=1%) 120x100=12000mins or 200hrs) My concern is not over the run time but over if this will even be useful data after 200hrs. I read somewhere that if the protein is not received in enough time then it can not be used and instead only the stats are added to the folding group which no offense doesn't mean as much to me as the scientific stand point.

Thirdly I understand that running the console uses more processor cycles and therefore isn't as efficient. With that being the case is running terminal the most efficient way?

And last which is least important and more of just a comment/observation, a dual-core or quad-core G5 must dominate these folding tasks. Anyone have any idea if those super computers around the world are doing these calculations? Like that one at Virginia - Tech?

I consider anyone who registered pre-mid-2001 to be old skool. Mainly because there's so few of them around. I remember all the incidents/previous members mentioned above, but that's not exactly ancient history. The only people i really think of as 'old' members would be eye and jef. Everyone else just seems to have not posted enough to gain any recognition, or to have joined too recently.

Speaking of old timers though, where's blakespot gone?

I was under the impression that it wasn't possible to use a PB display as an external monitor, unless you were running it over a network or whatnot.

Probably better suited in this forum...

    Windows on the Mac (http://forums.macrumors.com/forumdisplay.php?f=86)

But yes, it's been discussed before. Potentially, a Windows virus could infect the OS X partition.

Bugger I didn't see that forum. Hopefully this post can be moved soon. :o

It can infect the mac partition? oh well there goes my 'theory'

It's fun at the beginning, but when you are past that, take the no nonsense text console, or the script of mc68k (especially use it if you have a dual proc), they are faster then the graphical client.

Googles translation of what I think you all are talking about:

I met many people yesterday, and I listened much.

although nothing still is official, it seems that APPLE is directed towards AMD to replace G4.
One spoke again me of Jaguar under X86.
In any event it seems that APPLE is directed towards a solution preventing any possibility of installing Mac OS X on a PC.

    (I don't know French :o)

From that I get no new information, just more pondering. The last line gives me the impression that the writer does not believe that Apple is going to go toward the x86 platform for OSX.

Anyway, did not Steve say himself that there will be faster versions of the current models next year? and that the G4 still has alot of life? His comments certainly don't point towards x86 in Apple systems, at least not for along time to come.

I think we should let this subject die for awhile (like the Apple PDA rumors) and wait for more tangible proof and/or information concerning the x86/Marklar rumor.

How about someone get a screenshot of "about this mac" with Athlon instead of G4 in it? Or maybe something less easily photoshopped, like a motherboard with Socket A connections and an Apple logo next to it ;).

Lately my stomach has been making funny noises when ever 'marklar' related info is talked about... I guess I'll go to Costco and get some Pepto-Bismol so I can keep reading :D.

Is anyone else annoyed that they put the commercials on the homepage? I understand they are trying to get them out there and are happy about the commercials, but I dislike when I go to a website and audio kicks in automatically. Disrupts any song I'm listening to, kicks me out of whatever mood I'm in, etc. A link to them would be fine, but playing the commercials right off seems overkill to me. Plus, what about people without fast connections?

I agree. I hate it when Web sites start up with a video, sound clip, or flash animation.

Is there any utility out there that I can add to System 7 Today so that my visitors can get in on the folding fun?

If not, somebody should make one.

    Hi scem0,

how do you do this to keep up with the programs if you switch every couple years from one system to the other. And isn't it confusing in your workflow or are u just a consumer user. If so then the power ain't matter my friend.

I'm back folding for 3446, finally fixed the PC earlier this week.

Production's been low because I've been running it at it's bleeding edge for a couple of days. Math errors don't sit too well with the F@H software :o

Hopefully found the sweet spot now, though, so long as it doesn't burst into flames.

I believe you found an old PowerBook G3.

This is most likely pretty old, on the order of 3-4 years. Judging from the descriptions, it is most likely either the Wallstreet enclosure or more likely the Lombard/Pismo PowerBooks. I recognise the angled fans on the sides as being like those in my Pismo as is the push button release for the screen portion of the laptop. There is no such release button on the Walstreet models(they have a pull-release latch). Additionally, the drawings are purposefully vague to represent a more generic enclosure with the detail digrams focussing on the innovative and thus patented parts which could well explain the double squres represing "mouse" buttons.

BTW.... the head of the PowerBook Team has said repeatedly that Apple's reseach has found that most folks carry their internal expansion bay devices outside the Powerbook but in the same bag which means that there is little true portability gained by not providing internal expansion bays and thus the justification for dropping them on the PowerBook Ti line in favor of a slimmer design.

I fold but for a different team. Though I ask about Apple computers and they dont respond. Very few mac buff's at those forums.

So I thought that I would ask here.

I have never really been around Apple's before. My dad's wife is a Apple buff though. Loves them to death. I figure that I would love them too because I love to do video editing. So, she ordered one for the family. It is a PowerMac G5 @ 1.8GHz. Now how well will this fold? PPW wise? Like a P4 @ 3ghz?

Does the cpu have something like HT so two processes can be ran?

Are powermac's at 1.8ghz dual cpu or just single? I really hoped that she had got the 2ghz one but she got 1.8 some how and I cant even find it on apples site. She only ordered it last week and we should be getting it something this week.

    thanks for the help.

Also, does it get hot at 100%?

If I burn a track for my wedding video, yes, I'm technically breakeing the law, but there is nothing immoral about doing that. No one is losing out on any money. No one is being hurt. He isn't stealing anything. He's breaking a copyright law that makes no sense in that case. The artist who recorded the piece, and the writer of the piece, are being denied the monetary compensation they are legally entitled to, so yes, someone is losing out on money.

Radio stations can't play music without paying for it, and movies and TV shows can't include music without paying for it (these licensing fees are why, for example, you will never see WKRP in Cincinnati on DVD, since licensing the music would cost too much). A wedding videographer who uses someone else's music is themselves profiting from its use without compensating the creator. And that's wrong.

There are plenty of sources for royalty-free music, and there is software that will even let you create your own original pieces, that you can use however you wish. But if someone wants to use "Wind Beneath My Wings" on their wedding video, and distribute it to 250 people, then yes, they should get the permission of the song's owner, and pay them appropriately.

It's, erm, insania. The gist of it being that the whip-wielding vampire-vanquishing adventure into androgyny, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, is going to vanquish vampires and wield whips on Xbox Live Arcade this Wednesday (when else?). An 800 MS Point ($10) expenditure will net you both the original version of the game and another that boasts improved HD visuals and sound.

I am an Apple shareholder. I feel entitled to DRM-free products.Good for you, I am too. But as someone else here said, "I want a pony!"

Present your opinion at the next shareholder's meeting. Presuming you own enough shares to bend their ear, they might listen. If not, then vote down Jobs and/or the board (again, owning a bunch of shares is helpful here.)

Remember though, what Apple owes us is return on investment. The only logical reason to buy shares in a company is that you either want to earn profits from it or you intend to buy it out (and earn profits from that). Ask yourself this: does Apple removing DRM from iTMS tracks make financial sense? Before answering, consider that Jobs said (the day the iTMS openned) that the FairPlay DRM was the best balance they could strike with all of the record labels. I'm sure any change in DRM would require ratification of the contracts with those record companies. Fat chance. (The only way I could see this happenning would be if un-DRM'ed tracks cost $5 or something - but even then, I doubt it)

The other reason to buy stock is because you like the company and want to support it. This is less of a logical reason, though, and falls under emotion. Not that there's anything wrong with that (it's probably part of my decision to own AAPL).

Customer safety concerns lead chain to choose breakfast launch for PS3.
Leading specialist chain GAME has opted not to open at midnight for the PS3 launch this Thursday - following advice from the Metropolitan Police.

The chain's Oxford Street store was originally planning to hold a midnight opening event on Thursday (March 22nd). However, following consultation with the Metopolitan Police - and, given the high value of the PS3 consoles - GAME "has put its customers' safety first" and made the decision to open the store at 7am on Friday (March 23rd). As the GAME statement points out, this will guarantee that gamers have access to public transport and can safely take their consoles home in daylight.

The first 150 gamers to have pre-ordered the PS3 are invited to attend the store at 7am, where they will be greeted with bacon butties, pastries and coffee. They will also have the chance to claim Sony goodie bags.

"The launch of the PS3 is a big deal to our customers," said GAME's marketing director Anna Macario. "We are managing the launch so it is safe for them, and the only thing they have to concentrate on is securing their new console."

HMV has also opted not to open at midnight on Thursday. Virgin Megastores, meanwhile, will be hosted the official launch event at its Oxford Street store.

God I hate console launches. It's all self-indulgant BS.
