I do it to heat my room... oh, and cure stuff too. ;)

haha, that is so true! I had a much smaller bedroom last year, and I swear when I had my iMac folding it made the room a couple degrees warmer.

Re-read your post on the first page. So, there's been no one that has run into rtgoldfish on X-Box Live?

At least that could make for a possible lead if someone could get the thief to say where he/she lives.

I miss the old MacRumors. When there were intellectual posts in threads. I remember JefHatField (who is that now BTW, I forget),

he he...i am still jefhatfield...i was networkman for a short time in the early days of macrumors back when i was still enthusiastic about being a techie (which i have burned out on over the years)

when i see these boards today, i get used to the new, heavy posters and i think they see macrumors in a new, fresh way us oldtimers did back in the day and they have a sense of community here...otherwise, they wouldn't keep coming back day after day

i have definitely lurked more than actually posted but that's ok since it's fun to see the new order of macrumors and the personalities and points of view on just about everything under the sun

Currently I'm #330 on the MR team #3446 and have only been folding for a year with my G3 chugging away 24/7. A week ago I added my G4 at work and last week my boss bought a new DELL for my PC workstation and I'm going to add that one also. And (but not the last) I'm going to add another G3 I use as a file storage device, as soon as it goes to OS X. So all in all I'll have 3 Macs and a PC doing my folding, so I hope to see myself keep rising in the standings.

PS. I'm a Moderator on the "Prepressforums.com" site and have had my signature with the "Folding@Home" tag on it for a while. I finally got pissed at the lack of response and said so in one of the Threads. I got hammered with replies and a few (don't know how many) even downloaded the software and have started Folding in the last couple of days :D

    I would hope so!! ;)

There have been reports of GPU's burning up from the heat while on standby. I had to move the wii as it was in the direct downwind of the PS3, which didnt help any. It's warm to the touch even when on standby.

    Ed

Since when is there a GPU in a Wii :P just kidding

I seriously didn't think this would happen by 2010. Wow.

Haha seriously! I thought Dell would just stay with Intel all the way through. But then again, they're sales have been VERY bad the past year, and there have always been rumors about Dell jumping onto the AMD bandwagon.

This should be very interesting though. I love BOTH AMD and Intel. Looks like the competition is about to heat up soon! I think Apple will kick everyone's butts once they have Conroe and Merom in their computers!

leave god out of scientific reasoning, you cant mix blind faith (and it is blind) with science.

Blind faith, yes, I'd agree with you - just automatically going along with whatever anyone else says without giving it some thought yourself and questioning it is foolhardy - in fact, it's a definition of brainwashing.

To get an understanding, I think both of you should read post #37 on this thread (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=1581910#post1581910). Any questions you have I will answer to the best of my ability. Feel free to give me a private message if you want. ;)

They should have demand free MacBooks:D for the time and embrassment of being stuck in an elevator.
    Or at least an iPod.

Hmm...David Blaine should do something like that. Just stand, stuck, in an Apple Store elevator for 3 weeks. Its ingenious!
...and we could fill it with water. Maybe he'll actually break the record this time.

I'd have to agree; the real tip-off is the space between "Power" and "Book"... (i.e. it reads "Power Book" not "PowerBook" as it should). Great piece of wishful thinking, though...

But maybe I will be suprised because by now I set my expectations so low...:D You can go to the education area of the Apple Store (http://www.apple.com/education/) where you can find prices that are somewhat lower for those available to the general public. You don't have to wait for promotions, although those may reduce your price even more.

Actually saying that SPEC doesn't use memory bandwidth, or that it only stresses the processor is silly. Notice how much the Power4 leads the PPC-970 in SPEC floating point? That has everything to do with memory bandwidth (including L3) since the execution cores are exactly the same (except where the PPC-970 has added things like AltiVec).

What do you base this on? Since obviously SPEC stresses both memory and CPU (based on PPC-970 vs Power4), all that is left are things like video cards and hard disks, and those are the same for Macs and PCs.

It is true that SPEC does not reflect Photoshop or RC5 scores, and I expect those will favor Macs as much as ever, probably even more so than ever before.

What I'm talking about is memory, PCI, AGP, northbridge, etc. bandwidth outside of cache. Cache is highly integrated with the processor, so in int and fp scoring, more cache helps, however, int anf fp routines rarely leave the bounds of L1, L2, & L3, where memory bandwith, system I/O, and even paging to disk can all affect relative performance.

Notice how SPEC scores remain virtually constant as RAM/storage is added?

A slightly more balanced way of measuring full system perfromance in TPM, where a database, the processor, and the RAM are all stressed.

The current G4 is starved for sytem bandwidth, meaning that when you're waiting, your waiting for the disk to write to memory to feed instructions to the processor, much more often than you're waiting for the processor to execute instructions.

Our current architecture uses many small pipes feeding a medium valve. The bottleneck is more often the pipes than the valve. Hopefully the 970 and associated MoBo will change that to many medium/large pipes feeding a large valve, meaning that the valve will be constantly supplied.

Yep, it is the best and most efficient one. FAH stores its documents in the same folder where it installed its app in. So, for the script of mc68k this is in the folder F@H of your own home directory. You can check the progress of the of a WU by typing "work" in the terminal, and "pause" to pause the folding (if you want to do a heavy game or something), and "resume" if it needs to go back to folding after you paused it. These are the only commands you really need for letting it fold. Check out the read me that came with installer script. You can also open the file "FAHlog.txt" in the in the F@H folder if you want to know the progress of the WU.

    Welcome to the team!

Great...one more thing...and this is more tied into how OS X works.

I have a cool screen saver that i set to go on after 5 minutes of no activity. But i have my display set to sleep after 10 minutes of no activity. I don't want the screen saver to run while folding after the display sleeps, but i'm not sure if the screen saver is actually running while the display is off.

    Does anyone know that?

I feel slightly insulted, as noone here expects me to have done any research. After clicking the "Create trial acount" button in the teaser, it leads you to an error page. You click "Return to Main", whereafter you click the "Create Accoutn" button. Then you agree to some license stuff, and it then asks for the auth key here (https://signup.wow-europe.com/authkey.html).

Now I'm confused. The create account button says, it is for excisting guest costumers, who decide to purchase a full acount. I don't understand this, as I the see nowhere to create a trial account.

EDIT: Problem solved. I got the trial key he got from Burnign Crusade. Thanks a lot for your replies. :)

Creative is blowing negative smoke out it's ***..The ITC does not investigate and/or make decisions on patent infringements..The US Patent office does I believe..
Infringement is usually decided by US district courts.

EDIT: Here's what the ITC thinks they are doing:

    http://www.usitc.gov/ext_relations/news_release/2006/er0612dd1.htm

The U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) has voted to institute an investigation of certain portable digital media players. The products at issue in this investigation are MP3 players.

The investigation is based on a complaint filed by Creative Labs, Inc., of Milpitas, CA, and Creative Technology Ltd. of Singapore on May 15, 2006. The complaint alleges violations of section 337 of the Tariff Act of 1930 in the importation into the United States, the sale for importation, and the sale within the United States after importation of certain portable digital media players that infringe a patent owned by the complainants. The complainants request that the ITC issue a permanent exclusion order and permanent cease and desist orders.

The ITC has identified Apple Computer, Inc., of Cupertino, CA, as the respondent in this investigation.

By instituting this investigation (337-TA-573), the ITC has not yet made any decision on the merits of the case. The case will be referred to the Honorable Paul J. Luckern, an ITC administrative law judge, who will schedule and hold an evidentiary hearing. Judge Luckern will make an initial determination as to whether there is a violation of section 337; that initial determination is subject to review by the Commission.

The ITC will make a final determination in the investigation at the earliest practicable time. Within 45 days after institution of the investigation, the ITC will set a target date for completing the investigation. ITC remedial orders in section 337 cases are effective when issued and become final 60 days after issuance unless disapproved for policy reasons by the U.S. Trade Representative within that 60-day period.

What is blank screen mode? I don't run mine in screensaver mode, I turn it on and set my computer to stay on and just shut off my monitor.

    **edit**
And I'm pretty sure that seti units are always the same size, its folding ones that aren't.

Yes, they are all the same size but the amount of processing required to complete the task differs from unit to unit.

My G5 did a work unit in 45 mins one time. On average it takes less than 2 hours / unit :D. The command line app would be even faster.

I don't run it any more as it apparently rips hard drives and I couldn't be bothered setting up the RAM disk method. It also turns my G5 into a bit of a wind tunnel some times.
