DRM is a big, fat target for every hacker in the world. I doubt very much it will ever be perfect. It can't be. It would be easy to encrypt music so badly that you couldn't play it. To allow legit users to listen to it means the key is already there. The hacker just finds it.

    Who was yzdef?

I liked him, then he got banned... then I asked a mod who said he would look into it... and he never die...

    *WINK*

    *WINK*

Okay so the 4 person vote is
    Move: 3
    Nothing to Talk about: 1
    Leave it here: 0

(Stelliform never gave an view did he?

He just gave himself a complement... ;) )

    edit: See Below.

So... unless there is a surge in the 'Leave it here' Votes, I see Move the current victor.

All we need is a Mod or Someone to give Mod powers and we are all set.

i find it to be clunky and hard to use... specially the typing.

I use the cell phone layout, and it seems to work perfect for me. I don't like the full keyboard too much moving around.

Faster this, faster that. Software here, software there. Upgrade this, upgrade that. Blah! Blah! Blah!

I like computers just as much as the next geek but when you break it all down what can't you do with computers and OS's from even 5 years ago that you can today? In truth the only real benefits are that Windows and Mac systems are faster and more stable than they used to be. For Macs to make any inroads more innovation is the key. They cannot compete on price/performance and never will. Moving to x86 could help of course. Note that most people don't buy Macs because of price and not because of performance issues.

So with this in mind if you set aside the small contingent that truly needs faster Macs for their jobs in professional settings, the Mac really needs lower prices and more innovation. Do that and Apple will have a winner that they would need to open up the clone market again just to be able to make enough of them.

Frankly this whole benchmark argument is stupid for most of the people here. Benchmarks should be used as nothing more than a guide and you should have multiple sources if you want to base a purchasing decision from them alone. Too many people treat them as the end all be all.

But the arguing with PeeCee users provides instant satisfaction! ;) :D

    Chris chmorley,

It's not just Republicans that have strong opinions about stuff they know very little about. Democrats fall into that description as well. There are bull-headed know-nothings in just about every group that you can think of.

I sreached around and found a couple of Linux LiveCDs that have the Folding@Home client on them... This is great news for me, as it means i can get about 5 P3 machines that are sitting around work doing nothing becuase they have no HDDs up and running in my office (I have an office designed for 2 people, but I'm the only one in there, so I have lots space to build up a nice little farm).

My question is if anyone has a recommendation for which LiveCD is 'best' (easiest to use, most stable, least overhead - more power for Folding)? I used to run the SETI@Home screensaver client on my PC, before I started using Macs, so awhile ago) and would like to start up again, but with the folding project this time. I will be able to have about half a dozen 24/7 machines going with a Live CD, ranging from P2-333 to P3-600, plus my home computer (mini 1.42) and work computer (P4-1.8ghz) giving what they can when not in use for their intended purposes.

Anyways, any help getting these diskless machines up and running would be helpful... I'd like to have them all Folding for the MRs team by weeks end!

Right. They haven't announced when they're starting volume production. It could be October 2003. It could be December 2003. But that's besides my point. However, volume productions doesn't mean they're immediately available by that time. It takes time to come to the demand of this product for Apple. You might want to reread the Arstechnica article I posted.
NEWS - IBM is sampling 400, 500, and 600MHz versions of their PowerPC 750CXe chips. Samples are available immediately and volume production begins in April. Now, weren't these the chips being used in the new iMacs that are available right now? I'm guessing that Apple has a separate production deal with IBM to bring the 400-600MHz chips out right now in volume, while IBM samples the chips to other manufacturers in more limited quantities for the time being.
Great! Guessing! And I really doubt that IBM would do that. That's risky stuff. Again, volume production != shipping immediately. It varies company by company.

LATE 2003/Early 2004 at the earliest the 970 would be shipping.

And besides, this is a pretty much brand new chip. The PowerPC G3 is old but tried and true so manufacturing and engineering defects are much lower. Especially with IBM.

ahhh. i'm curious about the 2 other announcements, that's for sure.....

hopefully it's not just new pods or hardware cause that wouldn't help me with my existing 5 gigger.... i'm hoping for aac support (in itunes as well of course)

but that's not THAT big an announcement.... we'll see i guess

I'm not trying to flame or insult anyone. I'm just trying to determine the validity of what you are saying like everyone else. I have no problem with most of what you posted. But for someone from IBM to say

"apple's already on the way... DONE DEAL... but have you heard about the power5 in development?? i wish i could use them in our 3D workstations, but as of yet they cant run windows... but we'll see."

Link: Napster To Go DRM cracked already: stupid is as stupid does (http://www.macbytes.com/link.php?sid=20050214233050)

Ummm... Wouldn't the cheaper solution be to subscribe to just plain vanilla Napster at $10/mo instead of Napster-To-Go at $15/mo? I mean, since you have no intention of ever using the Janus technology, why pay the extra $5 for your all-you-can-transcode smorgasborg?

FWIW, I knew several people who did exactly this when Napster 2 first went live last year. They took their free month subscription, downloaded all the albums that interested them, and analog-ripped them to DRM-free. None of them are subscribers any more. Having a conscience, however, I don't think they've returned to do the same again. Yet. Hardly news-worthy!

IMHO, this is bad news. Not for Napster, who will have inflated subscriber numbers and can shove the churn numbers under the table for a while. This is bad for the recording industry, who just saw their entire back catalogue relegated to the $10 discount bin. This is far worse for them than the original Napster, as (1) there is no way to track the theives unless they're going to assume anyone who tries Napster then unsubscribes is guilty of having ripped the entire library (which might not be out of the question with the DMCA ... who needs silly civil liberties and "innocent until proven guilty"? This is the 21st century!) (2) the source quality is generally better than most of the files that were being sent around Napster 1.0, and (3) there's a few more years of music waiting to be plundered. Finally, of course, the final insult: the recording industry has its hands all over this; it is complicit in its own demise, directly here instead of as a public relations backlash.

Being bad news for the recording industry, this is also of course bad for iTunes. More importantly, it is really bad for people who actually *enjoy* listening to music and are able to pay for that music.

Negative votes all around. Obviously, there's a way around any DRM (if you can hear it you can record it). Obviously, rental programs like this make the way around the DRM from a personal "why would I do that" game to a high-stakes, "get my entire music library containing every song I've ever heard and a few I hope I never hear again for $10" game.
