I was thinking exactly the same thing. What a boring year for new Apple products. When they have been so prolific in recent years and not to bring anything new out all year apart from those shoes (well would you bother, seems to be a desperate move to get SOMETHING out) sets the alarm bells ringing that they may be losing their touch. AND they jump into bed with intel a seriously underperfoming outfit, who makes out of date processors too.

Come on Apple give us new stuff-something different not just a slightly smaller, thinner ipod.

    Thanks

Apple needs the G5 badly!!! These dual processors are the most retarted things I have ever heard of. They are a complete ripoff! Even with the architecture of OSX, the duals don't do anything. You are essentialy paying for another processor that just sits there and does nothing. If dual processors really worked, you would have seen them in windows machines years ago.

I wouldn't waste my money on a dual machine, that's why I'm waiting for the G5 before I buy my next Mac. Even if I have to wait another 2 years.

Whether any of the things on these boards are true (which most AREN'T), I still like getting my hopes up and having them hopelessly crushed when Apple delivers the product a year later than thought, or fails to deliver completely.

It's my favorite part of being a Mac addict!

You know, I wouldn't mind Apple giving us their product plans before they release processors, maybe like 1/2-1 year early. Just keep the products and features that will house them secret. Isn't that what Intel does, announce a product waayyyy before it comes out?

Someone please tell me why Apple isn't already doing this. (Remember, just processor announcements, not new cases and things like the iPod)

I've had the program running for many days now -- and it claims it will take another 8 days to complete a WU on a 1GHz G4.

This seems insane to me somehow.

    >guys, don't sweat it. by 2nd quarter of 2003 we will cruising along on 1.4 and 1.6 ghz overclocked G4s. oh man

<sarcasm>oh yeah</sarcasm>, that'll be consolation, though our bus speed will be @ 133mhz for the next 5 years

the latest version of the G4, apollo, can scale up to 1.6 ghz or more, so there is still another six months there, but maybe moto can come up with better processor and deliver...but if not, then go ibm

Again Apple Stores are seeing a major increase in sales, the only problem we have is that us the resellers are not seeing the stock as quick as we would like. People have been waiting for them for ages and are buying them as soon as they turn up.

If they really want good performance and aren't getting it they need to contact their favorite developer to work with the specs and Apple's developer relations. Apple provides the hardware, it is up to developer companies to utilize the hardware the best way they can. If they can't utilize Apple's hardware to its most efficient mode, then they should find better developers.

If you are going to complain that Apple doesn't have good floating point performance, don't use a PC biased spec like Specfp. Go by actual floating point calculations a second.
Nobody has shown anything to say that PCs can do more floating point calculations a second. And until someone does I stand by my claim.

ahhhh...so to get performance from the damned thing, I have to write arcane altivec code yes? well, sorry, I and many like me, neither have the time nor the patience to hand wring performance like this. Jeez, the days of hand optimising code are thankfully long gone, except, it seems with a g4. And we have to of course assume that even this mythical 18 million flops is based on the assumption that we can get the altivec unit supplied with data? hmm... This is not acceptable - spec fp biased? well, yeah, because it doesnt justify your end argument - the fact that most other companies are 'happy' to stand by it is merely justification for its 'biased' nature yeah?

    hmm.....

(maybe if there were some different type of display for laptops where an LCD screen would save people (schools?) money, we'd prolly see something like an ebook
(doesn't that "e" stand for education? I thought it did.... and which schools actually have a lab full of laptops?)

the "e" has lost it's meaning. it was originally meant for educational markets, hence, eMac. however, now that its available to all markets, the "e" could very well mean economical. they do tout it as the lowest cost new G4 system you can buy.

but the way, my lab has 30 laptops, which a set of 8 exclusively for my research class. thats one and a third of the labs.

    Quite interesting...
I heard at the Apple Expo in Paris that Logitech will deliver support for their force feedback devices for Mac OS X. Probably when Feral finally have finished their F1 CE.

Seems very good news to me

still waiting on a 64-Bit SMP client

I thought it was 64-bit? After all there is no 32 bit linux version yet so I would think the OS X version is 64 bit.

imac will go to 900 mhz high end
emac will to go 900 mhz high end
    crt imac will be retired
ipod will go down to $249 USD
jaguar will remain and os x 10.3 will come mid 2003

and all basic level macs will have a minimum of 256 MB RAM since 128 MB RAM is too small for OS X

    my 2 cents;)

but here is what i want which i don't really expect in reality:

tibook with superdrive and up to 1.25 ghz

    or...dual tibook

    ibook to 1 ghz
    or...g4 ibook

emac and imac to 1 ghz
    ipod to $199 USD
    crt imac to $649 USD

    :D :D :D

If these predictions are correct then Apple is finished. They need to get everything to at least 1ghz, iMac, eMac, and get g4's in their iBooks, or they are going to lose even more people.

Anyone else folding this protein (project 2363)? It's a double gromacs core project, and on my 1.8DP G5 it's taking 1:09 per percent! I.e., a 4.9 day folding project! It's not listed on the folding@home website, so I can's see how many points it's worth.
