Ha, it let me vote again, even though it hasn't been 24 hours - probably because I'm voting from work, from another IP address. It's only fair, since the system made me wait almost two days to vote at one point. :D

There is NO wasy that these are louder then PC fans. Classes started yesterday, and when I went into the school's Dell Lab, it sounded like the deck of an aircraft carrier in there. Next door in the Apple Lab, there were rows of pretty little PowerMacs (new dual 1 Gig machines) purring away like a litter of kittens. Or maybe that was Jaguar purring. :D

Well, I do write cross-platform applications. And I use Cocoa. No, Obj C doesn't go "deep" into the core of the application, but Obj C does a fantastic job on the UI. That is where Cocoa lies.

Any application which integrates UI code deep into its code base, be that UI code Carbon or Cocoa or Win32, will not be cross platform without great and expensive effort. I strongly doubt that Photoshop has Carbon any more than skin deep. Transitioning that layer to Cocoa would make Photoshop no less cross-platform than it already is!

Obj C modules link seamlessly to C/C++ modules. Obj C++ (new in Jaguar) allows you to put C++ right into your Obj C code modules, making integration even easier (C++ apps used to have to expose a C API to the UI layer ... now the UI layer can talk C++ instead ...)

If Apple made Project Builder cross platform for Win32, then we'd see some real action in Cocoa (since it is easier than Carbon or other C compilers).

Well, ProjectBuilderWO, the WebObjects development environment (and an extension on the normal Project Builder) runs on Windows as well as OS X. I believe it also includes an Obj C compiler. The problem is that Cocoa itself is not ported to Win32 as far as I know (and the performance hit of using such a translation layer would likely be too great to seriously consider it anyways).

Second, Carbon is no longer insuperior to Cocoa. The only real insuperiority in OS X was the lack of toolbars, drawers, and other specific features. The fact that Carbon apps look crappy is the fault of the developer. And now in 10.2, Carbon apps have access to Services, toolbars, sheets, drawers, etc. It's just a matter of slogging through all the Carbon legacy code and modifying it to look better, work better, etc. Once Carbon developers rewrite the code for their interfaces, you'll barely be able to tell the difference, assuming they follow the guidelines.

Well, that's assuming that said developers are getting something out of their Carbon code. When was the last Carbon update? I don't remember seeing one recently. If you don't need OS 9 backwards compatibility, Cocoa is a MUCH better API than the Carbon kludge!

    From MSNBC:

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/13314892/wid/11915829/

NEW YORK - The International Trade Commission has launched a probe into whether Apple Computer Inc.s iPod digital music player infringes on a Creative Technology Ltd. patent, Creative said Wednesday.

Creative filed a complaint alleging Apple imported into the United States and sold iPod devices that infringes on Creatives Zen patent, which covers the user interface in its Nomad and Zen portable digital media players.

Creative asked the ITC to issue a permanent exclusion order and a permanent cease and desist order against Apple.

Representatives for Cupertino, California-based Apple were not immediately available for comment on Wednesday.

Creative said the case will be referred to Administrative Law Judge Paul Luckern, who will hold hearings and make an initial determination as to whether a violation was committed. The commission typically issues a ruling about 12 months to 15 months after an investigation starts.

First off, I hate to say that you are wrong shrek, but you are wrong. Cell phones get more and more expensive every passing month. People are going to more and more have to "pay $500 for a phone". This does not necessarily mean the consumer pays this $500. Cell phones are a subsidized product. They are subsidized by the cellular service provider you purchase the phone from. If you went to a service retailer today and wanted to buy, say, the new SonyEricsson T68i you would probably pay around $2-250 for it. You can get it at this price because the service provider has

    1) purhcased the phone in bulk
    2) has locked you into a year minimum service contract
    3) ensured you stay with them by "locking" the phone from other service providers

If you were to buy the phone from SonyEricsson you would pay $500 dollars. It works this way with all cell phones.

Secondly, Apple has nothing to gain by manufacturing cell-phones themselves. They have already joined forces with SonyEricsson (not motorola!!! b/c everyone knows motorola phones are crap) to make apple and SonyEricsson products compatible therefore boosting each others sales. I will not post the link for this, just go to sonyericsson.com or think back to the huge posters at Apple Paris that had T68's on them or the demonstration of iSync Mr. Jobs did at MWNY (also using a T68). Why would Apple, or any business for that matter, want to push another companies product for them then enter the same exact market???

Thirdly, I am sure that you, as many others (myself included), would like to see an apple phone. But it is something that is just not going to happen. Don't get yourself (and a lot of passers by) all excited and hopeful for a product that is clearly no where on the horizon.

SO, to bring this back to the thread topic, the answer is no! Apple and Motorola will not be collaborating on any "iPhone"'s nor should you want them too. Moto can't even produce their chips on pace with the rest of the market, Apple should be trying everything it can to get away from them (and I think they are i.e. Marklar or possible IBM partnership).

    Great article - he's obviously pro-Mac, but it's a good read.

I don;t think that Apple set out to make Microsoft fumble - that was bound to happen on its own. Look at the freaking OS (heck we could even debate whether it's that at all).

    Sam

I share your very pro-mac attitude, but it IS pro-mac to call a spade a spade. I hate to admit it too, but Wintel is getting faster and faster and we're sitting still.

OS X is an amazing Unix based os that should Scream in every app, and yet Wintel is kicking our buts in 3D graphics which should be a mac relm. Instead of blindliy saying that Mac is best we should self examine and send Apple our opinion via their feedback on their website.

I know that people hate car examples so I will use a totally different one. War history.

Hitler was not only an evil Nazi facist, but he was once a corporal and knew little or nothing about war tactics/strategy. He had some of the greatest generals of the 20th century working for him. Field Marshalls Von Manstein, Von Rundstedt, Rommel & ColonelGeneral Guderian but to name a few. Read up on military history, these were great leaders of fighting men, and Hitler was a politician.
They constantly told him that he was doing things wrong and he just refused to listen, to the point of firing all of them at one time or another for telling him The Truth Now, granted, we are better off that Hitler lost (those Generals themselve were even happy about it) but that proves that you gain nothing by denying the truth.

now back to Apple. Apple is only gonna make machines that are faster than Intel (i.e. G5, G6 etc...) if we DEMAND it. If we are content with 800MHz note books, while IBM makes 2.0GHz and Alienware makes 2.6GHz ones that smoke us, then we are doing ourselves a disservice.

I am a dedicated Apple user, but only because of OS X, until OS X, I was a Windows guy and wanted an Apple, becasue back in 2000, the G4 was the top. I figured that between the G4 and Unix, I was gonna be top. But Apple has stood still (compared to Wintel) and I am starting to get anxious, and so are others.

there, I've said my $.02............can we still be friends?

Keep us posted! And MAKE SURE you keep details logs (even if it's on paper) of the date/times you notice these things. Also, you need to make sure that you take a picture of the house with the blue glow as well!

I've been taking screenshots of when they connect to my network and writing down who is home in the neighborhood when it is connected. Also have my router set to log IP addresses just in case.

Hahaha! Wow! I thought I would never have a reason to share my media on a 360, but for security purposes, I should :) That is amazing and stupid on your neighbor's part. See, there's reason to invest in the $100 WiFi dongle. :D

Please do keep us posted. That may not enough for a warrant, but maybe having a cop visit either homes may be enough for someone to break. It is only down to two houses after all.

Wow, stealing WiFi AND a X-Box 360? Any laws in your area about stealing an internet connection? :D

Yeah, that Connect360 program is great. It even tells you the serial number of the 360s that are on your network so I know it is mine.

I'm not too sure about stealing internet in this area. Its a college town with a ton of apartments so I'm sure there is a lot of it going on. Whether the police do anything about it or not is a mystery to me.

Maybe this is just my OCD talking, but I don't understand why people are still calling it a Power4 Lite (particularly an IBM "employee" - yes I'm skeptical, technocoy) when IBM's already clearly labeled it a PowerPC 970. I think the continual usage of "Power4" in relation to the new CPU is misleading. When news of this chip first broke, I could understand the usage because it helped us to get an idea about what the chip was about, but now it's got a name and we know it's a fairly different animal from the Power4. It's not a high end server CPU like the Power4, it's a PowerPC chip, just like a G3 or a G4. Even though it's 64 bit, it's still a PowerPC.

    I apologize for my anal-retentiveness.

EDIT: Guess I don't type as fast as alex ;)

A lot of places I know of are still on Illutrator 8 because there are so many pre press issues with transparency in Illustrator 10 and illustrator 8 works fine. We use Illustrator CS where I work.

That's kind of strange though-- you can't deny that some clients have Illustrator 10, and those same ones are bound to use transparencies sooner or later.

I went to some Adobe seminar aimed at "print professionals" last year that went over the entire creative suite, especially transparencies and using files with them in InDesign. It was funny watching all these pre-press guys bitching and moaning about transparencies, but the Adobe spokeswoman swore that "they are working on it" and gave the steps to fix them before press.

And, by an amazing coincidence, QEMU just happens to include a FreeDOS image...
The iEmulator site admits it's built on top of qemu. What's the big deal here, hm?

    From the FAQ:
Is iEmulator based on the BOCHS emulator?
No! BOCHS is a fantastic, flexible effort, but we found it to be too slow to be "day-to-day usable" on the majority of hardware we tested with. In all of the tests we've tried, our solution, based on the powerful QEMU codebase, runs significantly quicker! Please note that QEMU is a trademark of Fabrice Bellard.

Yeah, it seems to happen periodically with the 'mote and nunchuck that came with the Wii, but not the ones I bought after.

They've figured it out now so they know what to do in case it happens. Pause the game and unplug the nunchuck. Is that mature :p?
