Hey man, don't knock the Pismo-it's one helluva a machine, especially now that you can upgrade it to a G4. The first TiBook was a joke if you ask me. Same video card memory as the Pismo, same speeds as the Pismo (albeit in the G4 variety), and no expandability. Let's not even talk about ruggedness. I wanted a TiBook for the longest time, but nothing has come through the pipe that I liked. The last revision was the closest to what I would have expected a year ago. Don't get me wrong, I like the Ti for it's looks and size, but at that price point, I expect something that will just blow the upgraded Pismo away.

    Flame away.

    Ok Backtothemac,

Fair point, I'm probably being bit extreme, and I certainly don't want to start a flame war - but you see what I'm getting at.

I'm sure the new DP 867 Macs are wonderful - in fact I think all the current hardware range is great. It's just that Uncle Steve wants everyone over to OSX, yet some of the machines are still coming with only 128mb (iBooks) which only just enough for OSX let alone any serious software (Warcraft 3 would choke). And 256mb in a professional level DP tower is just daft, Photoshop will eat that just by starting up.

What I don't like is the fact that it's made out to be some sort of favour, when you should not really have to upgrade something as fundemantal as RAM the moment you buy the machine.

The offers not even available in UK (where I am) anyway.

I put Konfabulator on my Mom's Dull - er, Dell - yesterday. Looks the same, acts the same.

It sucks 'cause now the coolest app on my PB won't let me say "sorry, Mac only!"

Apple should have paid the developers. I'm disappointed.

I like King Cobra. He is one cool dude.

Yeah, I guess I might 500 posts one day. I'm just not going to do like some folks and post for the sake of posting, just to hit a new status. I mean, cmon...

My mama taught me that if you don't have anything to say, don't say anything at all.

In reflection, this post is kind of worthless, so I am guilty of my own criticism...but at least it can answer your avatar question, Jef, in that I haven't given it the slightest thought. :)

The name eBook is already taken. However, I believe Apple could do better with three different lines of laptops. Leave the PowerBook as the high-end and include everything a high-end notebook should have. Then, make the iBook 12-13"-es with a lower G4, slower FSB, less VRAM etc,...but make it good enough to be used by professionals even if the price goes up a little. Then make a new entry level laptop... $999. G3, processor etc. It could work. Not everybody who wants a G4 notebook wants a TiBook...it is too damn wide. I prefer a smaller laptop.

Could have implications for a Sony-Ericsson-Apple superphone. I'm not sure if the 1.8" drives (that's in the ipod) can fit into a phone. It'll have to be one of these flash media cards. CompactFlash, Microdrives, and MemorySticks seem to have the biggest growing potential.

Face it. It's time the design industry stop being *****-footed troglodytes and realize that, yes, indeed, ID combined with OS X on a new PowerMac will increase your productivity.

And it's similar enough to Quark that one could EASILY adapt. Hell, I did it after using Quark for almost 6 years.

Now? I'm all for Quark dying a quick, albeit painful death.

    Here's to apple "thinking different!"

    Here here ID2!

Totally..... I used Quark for years before I got my mitts on Indesign...... Quark is just so early 90's...... :p :p

I would highly recommend not to hook up a computer to a plasma.

You could burn the screen very easily.

There is no way in heck that the performance delta can be so large without a large difference in quality of JVM. G4's may be slower, but they are not as slow as those number indicate.

Like I've been saying, when you start to see 5x leads by the PCs you need to start asking questions about the fairness of the benchmark. The G4 is better than 1/5 the speed. There are very few things were a P4 can get better performance per clock than a G4.

    BTW:
Your G3 results as bizzarre as well, because of the contrast between them and the G4 results. Do not take it as proof one way or the other of the G3 or other IBM chips being superior to the G4. What we have here are raw numbers that defy a simple explanations. We should ask why these numbers are popping up, rather than running off with them as if they were uttered by a great voice in the sky or somthing.

I should note that the 90 second and 72 second results I just recently posted are from my cocoa implementation, not java.. so the jvm is out of the picture now on the mac.

Do not take it as proof one way or the other of the G3 or other IBM chips being superior to the G4.

Don't worry, I don't make assumptions like that. And no, I dont think this does defy simple explanations. I will say that, what we are starting to see here is evidence that the scalar units (integer and fpu) in the IBM 750FX (G3) are more efficient than those in the Motorola G4.

If this is true, then my program hit it right on the nail. Also if this is true, it means there exist theoretical situations when using non altivec code that it would be faster on one of these newer G3 chips.

Also what alex said about how tedious it was to make altivec code, I would agree there is some truth to this. When you vectorize code (either for the P4 or G4), if you don't watch your p's and q's you can actually slow *down* your code. Just because you use the nice and special vector registers on these G4 and Pentium 4 processors does not mean you gain 5 times the speed. You literally have to take your methods back to the drawing board. You will only get peak performance out of pipelined, fully vectorized code.

None the less, scalar operations on both G3/G4 are miserable compared to x86. The JVM is no longer the deciding factor in the performance delta. It's out of the equation on the Mac since the benchmark is now a 100% native cocoa application with c code and no longer java. Mean while on the x86, the benchmark remains java.

    70-ish seconds navtive on a G3
    90-ish seconds on a native on a G4
    5.9-6-ish seconds running under JVM 1.4.1 on a P4

I think the idea of a 19inch screen imac is great but i just thought of one thing. The attraction of powermacs apart from the dual processor, extra hard drives and better graphics cards capabilities is the ability to add larger monitors eg.fabulous 22" or 23"HD displays.
If apple were to manufacture an imac with a 1ghz+G4,133Mhz bus and 19inch lcd it would probably have a better graphics card to drive the display and a superdrive as it would be the top model. in my opinion that could blur the line between the consumer and pro range. The price would go up i presume but it would still be cheaper than a lowend powermac with 17"lcd and you would also get more screen real estate.
Granted if your a professional you will most likely go for the gusto and buy a DP1.25Ghz but for the person who is lets say an incredibly enthusiastic consumer what would you prefer a dual 867Mhz with 17"lcd or a 1Ghz imac with 19inch lcd all in a neat little package(including superdrive+probably better graphics card).

This of course will only apply to someone who wants all apple cos they could just buy the DP867,add memory and cards and just buy a cheap, bulky crt(but then they will probably be plagued with a lack of space, high electricity bills and poor eyesight :)

I keep seeing people relate this chip to the Power4 in a negative way. I have not read anywhere (besides these forums) that this chip is a stripped down version of the Power4. Its design is based on that chip, but it seems as though it is an entirely new design in itself. Does anyone have and documentation saying that it is a stripped down Power4 chip, and that its performance is going to reflect that? This chip seems to be a successor to the Power4 not a low price alternative. Please correct me if I am wrong and point me to the documents you are getting this information from. Maybe I am just too optimistic;)

I confess the number of documents on my powerbook has trippled in the last 2 months due to a large project of mine. I've resorted to, and finally relied on Quicksilver to help, but i inevitably loose documents. I do that "where'd i put that Photoshop file who's name i can't remember that was emailed to me by one of the developers who's name i also can't remember". I find my self in Spotlight-yearning mode these days.

Anyone heard anything about them? I really want to upgrade the most I can, so as to be economical. If I'm going ahead and spending 700 bucks to get a 1 gig upgrade, why not pay an extra 200 to get a 1.2? However, I'm sure it's going to be more than 900 dollars if they are dual processor 1.2 Gig upgrades.

Anyone know if there will be a single 1.2 Gig that I could afford? :(

What are the downloads going like, surely the important thing about Firefox is the effect it will have on the PC browser stats.

We need it to kick IE up the arse, or at least force M$ into making updates that step closer to sensible CSS workings.

so anyone know if they're hitting targets?
