    Hi Redeye,

I have come accross another bug, or it's my dual G5... or Atszyman is spoking me out! Like he's ever gonna catch up with me!
This is the case: I have three folding widgets running for over a week now, no problem in that week. I have three because I want to monitor someone behind me (Atszyman) and my next overtake in front of me. But when I just looked all three widgets where on Atszyman.

Obviously, Apple will freak (what else is new...), but all this does is provide a shortcut around the burn-to-CD-and-rerip shortcut that's built into iTunes. You still need to buy the music. So, at best, this makes it easier to share music, but it doesn't provide a new capability.

I think it's a great convenience. I'm just saying that the inevitable wrath-of-God response from Apple is somewhat unwarranted.

I disagree. What he's doing is illegal and unethical.

If you burn a CD and rip it back, you're losing quality. The owners of the music (mostly RIAA, but anyone who licenses it to Apple) apparently decided that they can live with that. They did NOT agree to what this guy is doing.

    It's theft, pure and simple.

    More like the wrath-of-Jobs!

Anyway, I've never been one to agree with the Windows people that argue the security-by-obscurity for why Mac OS X is not hacked to bits like Windows, but it would seem that this adds aome serious fire to their arguement. Here in music where Apple is the most popular and widely used, they are getting hacked (semi-successfully) more often than their WMA counterpart.

There's a big difference. This is not a system security flaw. It's simply a matter of someone reverse engineering a file format. AFAIK, there isn't a single file format which has not been reverse engineered. That's actually a trivial task.

iTMS just used web service interfaces and XML over HTTP... It will be interesting to see just how they could stop an app from accessing.

What is more likely is that the iTMS servers would add in the DRM and buyer metadata before it gets downloaded. Its actually a little shocking that it wasn't designed to do that in the first place!

    Yes, they could do that.

They will also easily obtain a court injunction to stop this. What he's doing is illegal from two perspectives. First, it's a violation of the iTMS terms of service (which allows only iTunes access). Second, it's a violation of DCMA.

Personally I think this is great! Any sort of DRM sucks, even if it is rather "liberal". That's like giving all your customers in your shop a pair of handcuffs to prevent theft, and saying "but these cuffs are really comfortable".

I happen to disagree - but that's because my company depends on the ability to protect our intellectual property in order to stay in business.

The music owners have the right to do whatever they want with the music. You can legally (and morally) do what they request or live without their music.

Your position is the same as a person who steals a BMW because he doesn't like the purchase terms.

This is great news - by removing the DRM I can play my music on any device I like. It is my music after all. .

No, it's not your music. The music belongs to whoever the artist sold it to (usually a member of the RIAA). They sell you a license to use the music under a given set of terms. If you violate the terms that you paid for, you're stealing.

And if the industry would sell cheaper music without DRM then P2P wouldn't be as big of a problem.

If BMW would sell cheaper 5 series cars, no one would steal them.

The music industry owns the music - and they're free to price it however they want. If you think the price is too high, your only legal and moral response is to not buy it. Not liking the price is not justification for theft.

Missed the second reason, which has two parts:

1: There is no guarantee that Windows will boot on an Apple PC86 (without the user hacking the system and thereby voiding their warranty)

2: There is certainly no guarantee that the user will fork over $500 to MS to buy an OS when they already have a perfectly working Apple OS. Yes, some would if they could, but the software developer can't rely on that fact.

Both of which add up to the fact that the developer can't just tell its users to "just boot into Windows" any more than they today can tell their users to "just buy a PC/Mac". If they want the OSX user market, they will have to support OSX.

A very good read. To the above commenters, this should be put on a Wiki so that others can contribute. It would certainly an excellent start to a very good wikipedia article!

A very good read, very enjoyable.

IMPORTANT The widget doesn't work at the moment, sorry. I'll try to fix it, one day ;) /IMPORTANT

    Hello folders and interested people.

I was thinking about a widget to display your folding efforts, a few days after my first thought i stumbled on this (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=120057) thread. Apparently stubeeef had been thinking about this before i did.

Anyhow, here's (http://mr.yuru.be/widget/folding/FoldingTracker.wdgt.zip) the widget (current version 0.5b).
Please read this post through before reporting bugs :o.

The widget has been reported to work in Amnesty (http://www.mesadynamics.com/amnesty.htm), a dashboard for 10.3.9 users (thx stubeeef for testing this)

    the front:
    http://mr.yuru.be/widget/folding/front.png
    the bigger front:
    http://mr.yuru.be/widget/folding/front_big.png
    the back:
    http://mr.yuru.be/widget/folding/back.png

    a small FAQ (lol frequently)

    Set up:
If your Mac didn't do it for you, put FoldingTracker.wdgt in /Library/Widgets
On the backside of the widget fill in your 'numeral user id' I should find a better name for this one.

How do I find this 'numeral user id'?
You can find it very easily by clicking on the extremeoverclocking.com logo. On the right side of the page fill in your folding username. If you found your username, klick it. A page containing your folding efforts will load.

Ubuntu is the way to go! It's Debian based, which means GREAT apt-get support. If you don't know what apt-get is, it's basically a fast, stable, easy way to install packages. It even downloads it for you. From my experience, it's fairly light-weight as well. http://www.ubuntu.com/

DON'T get an ATI card. It doesn't work well with Linux.

Mine used to be the good ol' ZX81!!!

Hours wasted away at 3D Monster Maze, or even ZX Flight Simulator!!

I used to turn green at friends who had the ZX Spectrum, and want to disembowel those smug enough to own a Commodore 64...

Then I got my Apple ][e (VERY cool games - everything that came out for the C-64 came out for the Apple, so I was happy as hell).

It didn't last long before I got the Mac 512KE - REALLY decent games (remember Dark Castle??).

I never actually GOT a gaming console until '98 - when I got my Playstation. Loved it... Now it sits in a satchel in the corner.

    Oh, how times changed...

So I looked in my brand new (as of today) dual gig from macmall - who triples your ram on that model btw.

I had the 256 chip that came with the mac, and the 512 that macmall installed.

Go buy your machines from a third party already!

You can get a list of all the units you've completed at the folding a F@H site (link (http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=userpage&username=EricNau)), but that won't show how many points they were worth, or when they were completed. If you keep the logs, you can find out how when they were finished, but I don't think there's a way to find out of many points they were worth, unless you keep track of that manually, either by checking the points every time a WU is finished or by calculating how many points they were worth... (I think they keep some formula somewhere on the site). :p
Where does it show the WU I've completed?
All I see is this...

This is just the double your memory promotion. If you notice you double your memory and it will cost you $40 more. The savings you get is what they are listing as the instant saving.

    Here's an example.

PowerBook faster configuration. Price starts at $3,199 it says, " save $360 instantly off all memory upgrades!" If you were to add a second 512MB dimm it would cost $400. Take the $360 from the $400 dollars and what do you get $40. Which is what the double the memory promotion is, "Get twice the RAM for only $40.".

The Powerbook ultimate configuration is already maxed out on memory so they just give you the $360 off the price.

Yea, why are we at the bottom of the damn totem pole here? I mean, macs have an OS that needs a good graphics card, and no doubt OSX 10.3 (panther) will require something good for its next gen of quatrx extreme. C'mon, ATI, bring the mac cards out! Every Peecee owner on the planet now has a gf4ti (cept the smart ones that see they dont need the uber frame rates), so none will buy in the volumes mac buyers will buy cuz apple just happens to put middle end graphics cards in their rigs, so a replacement will be advised, especially for g4's that have older graphics cards, such as the first AGP G4.

I also think the 9000 will sell like dollar per pound marijuana in Compton (hehe)

I backed up my system t a 250 gigger in preparation for the install, but the install went flawlessly. All apps still work, that I've had the chance to use, and all my registrations, with the exception of QT are intact. QT is a new version, so I expected it to go away, but I developed a work around until I can upgrade to pro without legion of black suited Apple secret agents killing me in my sleep.

Huh thats what I usually do:confused: anyway im just trying to say it is a common problem and its not like they are going to replace your numchuck.

Common? Common would mean the majority. I don't see 50% of Wii nunchucks having this problem, just as it's not common for a 360 to break (unless that figure IS over 50%?).

OP - Just contact Nintendo. kick up a fuss and get some Wii Points too. If it's broken or just faulty then they will ship you out a new one. These are the guys who will replace DS's with a single dead pixel after all!

Yeah me too. It's one step on the right way up, but there's still a considerably large amount of steps to climb.

    Game invites, messaging, achievements etc....

I figure the 'achievements' are gonna come with HOME, isn't that what Sony had said? With those star wars like things in your room?

I still can't believe that people need to have those  The video game equivalent of a big dick contest.
